1. Who we are
This policy covers the AI Companion — Activity Helper browser extension (the "Extension") and how it works with the separate AI Companion desktop application (the "Desktop App").
Product website: https://ai-companion-website-henna.vercel.app/
Privacy contact: sankalp.kashiv@shriekglobal.com
2. Scope
The Extension is a companion to the Desktop App. It does not work as a standalone product. Most features — account sign-in, session history, AI evaluation, and cloud sync — are handled by the Desktop App and its backend, not by the Extension directly.
This policy describes:
- What the Extension collects and where it sends that data
- What the Desktop App may do with information received from the Extension
- What is stored in your AI Companion cloud account
3. What the Extension collects
When you browse with the Extension installed and the Desktop App running, the Extension may process:
- Active tab hostname — e.g.
react.dev(paths and query strings are stripped before sending) - Page title — the title of the active browser tab
- Short page excerpt — up to about 240 characters, typically from headings and the first paragraph on the page. The excerpt is intended solely to help distinguish productive and non-productive browsing context during focus sessions.
- Browser name — e.g. Chrome, Edge, Brave
- YouTube playback state — on YouTube watch pages only, whether media appears to be active (used for idle detection during focus sessions). This signal is limited to whether media appears active and is not used to collect watch history or video content details.
- Extension connection status — whether the Desktop App responded on localhost
4. What the Extension does not collect
The Extension does not collect or transmit:
- Passwords
- Form inputs
- Payment information
- Email contents
- Keystrokes
- Cookies
- Browser history databases
- Full URLs with paths or query parameters
- Screenshots
- Audio or video recordings
5. Where Extension data goes
The Extension sends data only to your own machine. It communicates exclusively with the Desktop App at:
http://127.0.0.1:17529
The Extension does not remotely execute code, inject advertisements, sell browsing activity, or share browsing information with third parties for marketing purposes.
6. What the Desktop App does with Extension data
After receiving data from the Extension, the Desktop App may:
- Show site-level activity during an active focus session on your device
- Use page title and excerpt in memory only to evaluate whether browsing aligned with your session goal
- Send title and excerpt to Google Gemini once at session end for that alignment evaluation, if you complete a session with AI evaluation enabled
- Store only aggregated activity in your cloud account, such as app name, bare hostname, category, time spent, visit counts, and alignment verdict — not titles, not excerpts, and not full URLs
Window titles from non-browser apps stay on your device and are not stored in the cloud database.
7. What we store in the cloud
If you use AI Companion with an account, your backend account may store:
- Focus session metadata (intent, duration, timestamps, summaries)
- Per-app / per-host activity aggregates (e.g. "Chrome · leetcode.com · 18 minutes")
- Alignment labels and short reasons produced after a session
- Account settings you choose in Settings → Privacy
AI Companion does not sell personal data or browsing activity data.
We do not store in the cloud:
- Full URLs or page paths
- Raw browser window titles
- Page text excerpts from the Extension
8. Extension permissions
tabs, activeTab: Detect the active tab and its hostname when you switch tabsscripting: Support content-script behavior on web pages when needednotifications: Optionally alert you during a focus session when you appear off-taskalarms: Run timed checks related to session drift detectionhttp://127.0.0.1:17529/*: Talk to the AI Companion Desktop App on localhost<all_urls>: The Extension requires access to web pages in order to determine the currently active browsing context during focus sessions.
9. Third-party services
- AI Companion backend — account, sessions, and aggregated activity sync (only from the Desktop App, not from the Extension directly)
- Google Gemini — optional post-session alignment analysis using title/excerpt data supplied by the Desktop App
10. Legal bases and your choices
You choose to install the Extension and Desktop App. You can stop data collection from the Extension at any time by:
- Disabling or removing the Extension from your browser
- Closing the Desktop App (the Extension cannot reach the local bridge without it)
- Adjusting privacy toggles in the Desktop App where available
11. Data retention
- Extension: does not maintain a browsing history database; it forwards current-tab context to localhost
- Desktop App: keeps titles/excerpts in process memory during a session, then drops them after alignment evaluation
- Cloud account: retains session and aggregate activity data until you delete it or delete your account
12. Security
Local communication is limited to 127.0.0.1. The Desktop App accepts requests only from approved browser extension origins and may additionally validate a locally configured authentication token. Cloud data is transmitted over HTTPS to the AI Companion API.
13. Children
AI Companion is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
14. International users
If you use AI Companion from outside your home country, your aggregated account data may be processed on servers used by our cloud providers. The Extension's browsing signals stay on your device unless the Desktop App chooses to include derived results in a cloud sync.
15. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy when the Extension or Desktop App changes. We will revise the "Effective" date at the top of this page. Continued use after an update means you accept the revised policy.
